Stereotypes are simply shortcuts.

We all have stereotypes. We think we know how older people think. How younger people think. How people from certain places think.

Stereotypes are just mental shortcuts. They let us move through the world without thinking about every individual.

But they cost us. They cost us understanding. They cost us connection. They cost us the wisdom of people we dismiss without actually knowing.

Real diversity work is about replacing stereotypes with actual understanding.

That takes time. It takes conversation. It takes genuine curiosity about why someone thinks the way they do.

When you replace stereotype with understanding, something shifts. You can’t dismiss someone when you understand where they’re coming from.

You might still disagree. But you respect them. And respect is the foundation of belonging.
