Relational mentoring is transformational because it focuses on connection and growth rather than instruction alone. It is not about telling someone what to do. It is about walking with them as they discover capacity and purpose.
In family systems this begins early. Parents who nurture curiosity and guide decision-making are laying the groundwork. Older siblings who take responsibility for guiding younger ones are practising mentoring. These daily habits build patterns that extend into adulthood.
Leaders can build on this by creating mentoring programmes that encourage shared learning. When young adults see themselves not just as receivers but as contributors they begin to develop the confidence to lead others.

Reflective question. Who am I mentoring right now who could become a relational leader?
