Most team building makes people uncomfortable. Real team building makes them feel seen.

Team building gets a bad reputation for good reason. Forced fun. Awkward games. Activities designed by people who don’t actually work with the team.

But there’s another kind of team building. The kind that actually builds belonging.

It’s built around identity and gifts. It invites people to show up as themselves. To be seen for who they are.

Here’s how to run activities that actually work.

The Identity Activity

Ask people to share something that’s core to their identity. Not their job. But something that’s fundamentally who they are.

“What’s something about you that wouldn’t change even if your job did?”

People share: I’m a parent. I’m creative. I’m someone who cares deeply. I’m curious. I’m loyal.

Then ask others to notice patterns. To see each other for who they actually are, not just what they do.

What emerges: Connection based on humanity, not just function.

The Gifts Activity

Ask people to identify the unique gifts each person brings to the team.

Not skills. Gifts. The thing that’s uniquely theirs.

Someone might have the gift of listening. Someone the gift of seeing possibility. Someone the gift of remembering details that matter.

Go around the room. Each person receives acknowledgment of their gifts.

What emerges: People are seen for who they really are. Belonging happens.
