You can have every promotion. Every title. Every symbol of authority.

But if you’re not reflecting on how you’re using your power, you’re just a person in a position.

Reflection is what turns a position into leadership.

Reflection is where you notice whether you’re building people or shrinking them. Whether you’re serving or being served. Whether you’re using your authority to expand others or to make yourself more comfortable.

Most people never reflect. They just assume that if they got the position, they’re doing it right.

But positions are easy to get. Character is hard to build.

John Maxwell, one of the greatest leadership authors wrote in several of his books that Positional Leadership is the barest minimum and the first step on the ladder of success

The truth is “the leaders worth following are the ones who stop every week and ask themselves hard questions about how they’re using their power. And then they actually change based on what they see.

That’s not weakness. That’s integrity. That’s the only kind of power worth having.
